Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Covid 19

Unexpected, and unprepared. We canceled almost everything. Our clientele have been very supportive.

But we were able to go full on with our 4-H Bee Keeping Project. Youth have been learning through 4-H Manuals we got from Purdue Extension.  Plus some facetime/zoom, and some individual one on one instruction in the field.

Due to a donation from Miss Patricia Pendley, we were able to start 10 youth as new bee keepers, and add 2 hives and an observation hive to the West KY 4-H Camp.

We purchased 3 lb. packages of bees with a queen to start new hives, and captured an additional 9 swarms of wild bees.  Some were swarm calls, some in traps the 4-Hers constructed.

Greg Drake our Ag. Agent and Tom Ballinger our incoming state bee keepers president, and a local producer, have been super helpful, answering dozens of questions, and teaching us how to start a hive, how to capture a hive, conduct an hive inspection etc.

We have conducted Speech, Demonstration mock interviews, even Gold and Emerald interviews remotely.

We have also done many “Grab Bag” programs during the Covid 19.

Several garden kits 100-110 units each.  These all included several SNAP recipes, and Plate it Up materials.  Plus excepts form ID 128 as well as a web link to that and other publications.

General Garden kit (Window sill garden kits)

Small plot garden kit (squash, cucumbers, zucchini, okra, tomatoes, green peppers)

Greens garden (lettuce, mustard, kale, spinach, sevin top turnips, beats, radishes, turnips)

Herb garden kit (cilantro, oregano, basil, dill, rosemary, thyme  etc.)

Pepper garden (9 types of peppers from sweet to set your ancestors on fire)

Water Fun kit.

Carpenter bee trap kits. With instructions. (52)

Bird House kits, with instructions, and paint (54)

Wooden Tool Box kit (31)

Cane Pole fishing kit (54) including cane, line, floaters, hooks, stringer etc. Included SNAP recipes for fish and other Plate it up type giveaways.

Straw Rocket kits (100) Principles of flight.  Kit included straws, stickers, mailing labels, and instructions from 4-H Aerospace Curriculum.

While these grab bags aren’t as involved as our usual project groups or day camps, we have kept in touch with our core 4-Hers, and helped them to have some new experiences.
