Planning Unit: Whitley County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Effective Resource Management

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The proper handling of beef cattle requires knowledge of cattle behavior and the presence of adequate handling facilities with sufficient fencing, watering, and feeding facilities to allow you to utilize recommended management procedures. Facilities on farms should be adequate to do the job and as economical as possible. They should last a long time and lead to better care of farms and animals.  The Whitley County ANR agent worked with a beef producer to improve the cattle handling facilities on his farm.  After an initial farm visit to assess the producer's needs and budget, the ANR agent networked with fellow ANR agents and equipment sales representatives to identify various equipment options.  After several subsequent visits the producer purchased a tub, alley, and chute system within his budget constraints.  Cattle handling time has been reduced by more than half, requires less labor, and is much safer.  The producer stated that he is getting too old to play cowboy and  feels much safer with the new system in place.
