Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Through a community partnership with the Muhlenberg County Job Corps the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Assistant from Muhlenberg County, KY presented the Healthy Choices for Every Body Curriculum to Job Corp students finishing their training at the site. Eight Job Corp students completed eight lessons in the Nutrition Education Program.
Through the Healthy Choices for Every Body curriculum the group was taught how to identify healthy foods through My Plate, plan meals with portion control in mind, read nutrition labels, eat nutritionally balanced meals on a budget, the importance of eating breakfast, and identifying the limits on empty calories. The group was also taught the basic food safety and basic cooking skills.
100% of the group made a positive change in consumption of any food group. Most notably, 88% made positive changes in eating more fruit each day, 75% made a positive change in eating dark green vegetables more often, and 75% made an improvement in drinking sugary drinks less often.
One client stated, “These classes have made me more aware of the foods I choose and has helped me to be more conscious of my body’s needs.”
