Plan of Work: Leadership and Community Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Daviess County has high importance placed on economic development, job creation and business expansion.  Multiple public and private organizations exist at the local level to aid commercial and industrial business recruitment, retention and expansion.  One of these organizations is the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Cabinet of which multiple agricultural organizations partner to obtain a board member delegate.  The Daviess County Extension Agent, a representative of local agricultural lenders and a Daviess County Farm Bureau board member were asked to serve on a task force with the EDC agriculture delegate to identify opportunities for the Economic Development Cabinet to have a greater contribution to agricultural farms and businesses.  A series of sessions were organized throughout the winter inviting early career Daviess County farmer leaders and an agri-business representative who are current participants in the Kentucky Agricultural Leadership Program to join in round table discussion of opportunities and obstacles facing local agriculture.  From these meetings talking points were organized to identify two key areas for the Economic Development Cabinet to address in their activities.  Labor recruitment and retention and planning and zoning restrictions were identified across all of the discussion sessions as areas which encumber agricultural business growth in Daviess County.  Resulting from these discussions are continued efforts utilizing local agricultural leaders in discussing the obstacles facing increased agricultural development through this COVID-19 experience.
