4-H Day Camp

Author: Alexandria Brasher

Planning Unit: Henderson County CES

Major Program: 4-H Youth Development Programming

Plan of Work: Nutritition and Physical Activity

Outcome: Initial Outcome

This summer Henderson County 4-H hosted a three day, day camp at the Henderson County Extension Office. During this day camp youth were able to create projects from the fair, complete physical activity, and make new friends. The group of youth learned from the photography curriculum and then visited Audubon State Park. Youth also learned about terrariums and dessert dish gardens from a Henderson County Master Gardner, the master gardener spoke well of the youth saying they learned a lot from the project and all of their project turned out very well! Youth also did a couple projects from the 4-H Cooking Curriculum and from this project at day camp, we had two youth that had never submitted a baked good at the fair submit a project during the fair and one even submitted her to the Kentucky State Fair and she received a blue ribbon. Youth also created art projects from the art curriculum and home environment curriculum and submitted those projects in the fair. Youth also learned to sew during the week and made a level one non clothing item, laundry bag. Only four of the sixteen youth that participated had ever sewed before and they all completed their laundry bag. At the first day of camp we had 11 participants, the next day we had 5 new youth show up that had heard about all the projects and new skills youth had learned the day before and wanted to participate. Of these five new youth, only one of them had participated in 4-H before, the others were new to 4-H. I spoke with a mom a few months later of one of the new 4-H members that came during day camp and she said that both of her kids were still talking about all the fun and new skills they learned at day camp and couldn't wait to come back next summer and maybe even try out 4-H camp as well. One of the new youth that attended day camp has joined cooking club and is now cooking at home with his older sister. Youth were able to learn new skills during this day camp as well as get rewarded for their hard work with ribbons at the county fair and state fair and show off their projects to the community.  Due to the sucess of the 2017 4-H Day Camp we now have over 40 youth signed up for 4-H Day Camp 2018 with over ten teens signed up to help with day camp! A huge jump from the amount of you interested in 2017!
