Quilting for the Community

Author: Janey Cline

Planning Unit: KSU Administration

Major Program: Master Clothing Volunteer

Plan of Work: Developing Leadership and Volunteerism

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Master Clothing Volunteers in Hart County teach a sewing construction program each month at the University of Kentucky Hart County Cooperative Extension Service to anyone interested in learning to accurately cut fabrics, sew accurate seams, and construct  quilts.  Each month a different quilt block is taught which gives participants a chance to perfect their sewing skills. All day quilting workshops are offered at various times throughout the year to allow Master Clothing Volunteers to further assist those who are needing additional help and for idea sharing.

An average of 20 participants attend each month. Each month, participants bring back their finished block from the previous month and share information on what they have done and how they have used the information learned.

The group made and donated 10 quilts to local veterans who attended the Veterans Day ceremony at the Hart County High School.

All participants have gained knowledge, skills, and self-confidence in sewing.  Several non-sewers have purchased sewing machines and now bring them to class so they can become more familiar with their individual machines in order to confidently sew at home.
