Plan of Work: Increasing life skills education for youth and families

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Financial education remains vital at all ages to promote financial security.  The Washington County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent partnered with the North Washington Elementary School to offer a monthly program series called Money Masters as part of the 21st Century Grant, which provides additional education during non-school hours.  The participant group consisted of eight to twelve children who ranged from Kindergarten to 2nd Grade.  The Family and Consumer Sciences Agent worked with Kelly May, Senior Extension Associate for Family Finance and Resource Management, to build a learning plan for the series using the "FDIC: Money Smart for Young People" curriculum.  Lessons included counting coins, weighing needs and wants, setting goals, earning money, and saving money.  Students shared that they enjoyed learning about money because it is important for everyday life.  Due to school closures related to COVID-19, the last two lessons were cancelled.  The Washington County Extension Service will continue to work with schools to provide life skills education to students and families.
