Major Program: Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices (general)

Plan of Work: Importance of Balance

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

According to research, nearly one in four adults aged 65 and older have trouble walking, climbing stairs, getting in and out of their car, taking care of their personal needs, such as dressing or bathing, and have an increased incident of falling. As we age, these difficulties can impact our well-being and our ability to live independently.

Exercising to improve balance, increase their muscles, improve their flexibility, and increase their motor skills have been taught to 3 different groups of senior adults in Pulaski County.  Chair exercise encouraging them to use their legs and arms while sitting to improve their flexibility, passing and catching foam balls to improve their dexterity, movement and eye coordination, and learning how to use stretch bands for all muscle improvement have been the basics of the class.  From word of mouth, the participants reported less falling, feeling better all over when participating in an exercise program and enjoyment of fellowship with others as some of the positive feed backs. Some reported their body was “stiff” when they didn’t participate in an exercise program.  They also report of a greater balance in their daily lives when they exercise and less falling.

The senior adults are encouraged to exercise at home to get at least 150 minutes of exercise weekly.   Based on the proven health benefits of exercise for older adults, a team of researchers theorized that exercise might also help adults prevent or delay disabilities that interfere with independent living.  Another goal of exercising regularly is to help them live independently longer.  Several members of the class have been over 80 years of age and all exercises are geared so that everyone can participate.
