In 2015 the CDC ranked Kentucky 5th in the nation for the percentage of adults being overweight. Research from this report shows that excess weight contributes to high rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and several types of cancer.
Partnering with the Winchester/Clark County Activity Coalition in the Clark County Wellness Challenge 12 week weight loss/physical activity event, Clark County Extension implemented the Weight: The Reality Series program, emphasizing behavior changes such as portion control, reading food labels, adapting recipes and increasing physical activity.
The Challenge had 927 participants reporting a total weight loss of 3,218 pounds. 97% of the participants reported learning new ways to reduce their calories; 78% reported learning new ways to increase their physical activity and 75% report they have made physical activity a daily routine.
