Plan of Work: Farm Bill Producer and Landowner Education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In August of 2019, Tom Miller, Ballard County Extension Agent for Ag and Natural Resources attended the Summer Economic Conference in Cincinnati at the invitation of Dr. Todd Davis, UK Extension Grain Marketing Specialist.  This meeting consisted of all the grain economists from across the cornbelt.  The focus of the meeting was the status of the crops across the cornbelt and to try and come to some consensus on marketing for the fall.  Another focus of the meeting was the coming roll-out of the 2020 Farm Bill Sign-ups with USDA.  While the information at the meeting was good, the contacts from other universities was invaluable.  Agent Miller was able to use contacts from the University of Illinois and Kansas State University to work with Dr. Davis to develop a powerpoint presentation entitled “2020 Farm Bill – What you need to Know”.  He used that presentation to train other KY Ag Agents at the Fall ANR Update in Bowling Green.  During this training, 25 Agents from across the main crop growing regions of Ky, were shown the changes in the new farmbill and were introduced to calculators and spreadsheets developed at Illinois and Kansas State to help each individual farmer try and make the best decision based on the history and production  of each of their individual farm numbers.  At the conclusion of the training 98% of the participants reported feeling more to much more confidant in discussing the Farm Bill Sign-up and 72% felt they would be able to use the presentation to train farmers in their home counties.
