Building a Healthy, Wealthy Future

Author: Rebecca Miller

Planning Unit: Bell County CES

Major Program: Securing Financial Stability (general)

Plan of Work: Achieving financial stability in homes and community

Outcome: Initial Outcome

More kids are heading off to college and do not know how to manage their money and find themselves in debt. According to a community needs assessment done in Bell County, several community members and the Bell County Cooperative Extension Council felt financial/money management classes should be taught to high school students in our area.

Using the Where Does Your Money Go and Building a Healthy, Wealthy Future curriculum, the Bell County FCS Agent teamed up with the Bell County High School Family Life Skills Teacher and the Middlesboro Boys Group Home to offer the program to 15 high school students. Students participated in hands on activities such as the ban game, discussed wants verses needs and how much they spend on money spending leaks.

95% of students correctly identified needs verses wants and gave examples. 100% now think differently and are more aware about how they spend and manage their money.
