Plan of Work: Leadership Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Luckily the County 4-H Talk Meet had been held in the fall semester, so there were county champions designated to represent at the district event.  But in March, the demonstration training had just begun.  Upon the Covid changes preventing  in-person meetings or events, learning techniques and practicing of 4-H demonstrations were offered via Zoom.  Youth were offered appointments with the agent and volunteer leader to practice their demonstration and the scoring resulted in several youth submitting their videos for the district event.  Five of  the county Talk Meet champions submitted their videos as well for a total of 7 county champions in the District 2 4-H Virtual Communications Day, and like many - first ever!  All seven youth received the district designation of champion and their videos have been submitted to the state competition.  As this effort on the part of the youth was conducted at home, each youth had at least one parent with their adult leader and 4-H agent involved with them on this project, two of the three were electronically, but nonetheless  - undivided individual attention.  As the parents were focused on this process, the comments received from them demonstrated their increased awareness of the value of this public speaking activity and how 4-H encourages this life skill in such practical ways.  The youth were encouraged by the parents by the requested participation in this project by serving as their "room host". Several of the parents expressed their surprise in how excited their child was to make their tape and submit it, admitting that it was something they didn't think they could do themselves!    The uniqueness of the event might have contributed to this energy, but the parental input certainly helped!  All involved learned skills in communications that have been and will be used in the expanding Virtual Participation present and future.
