Thanksgiving for Louisa Elementary

Author: Ruth Kirk

Planning Unit: Lawrence County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Lawrence County Expanded Foods and Nutrition Program Assistant Senior (EFNEP) partnered with the Louisa Elementary Family Resource Youth Service Center coordinators to provide nutrition education for limited resource families. Seven (7) required lessons from The Healthy Choices for Everybody curriculum was taught to parents that qualified for Thanksgiving baskets (baskets of food given to limited-resource families in the community). The EFNEP Assistant Senior organized this collaboration and agreed to lead the lessons for the group. Eight (8) parents participated in the program and shared the knowledge gained with forty-four (44) family members.

Pre and post evaluations were completed and the results were remarkable. As a result 100% of participants showed improvement in one or more diet quality indicators; 100% clean items/surfaces more often after contact with raw meat. Furthermore, 100% thaw frozen food at room temperature less often; 100% use a meat thermometer more often; and 100% plan meals and make a shopping list before shopping more often. The EFNEP Assistant Senior continues to partner with FRYSC to reach limited-resource families with nutritional information and resources that assist them in making healthier food choices and positive lifestyle changes.
