Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)
Outcome: Initial Outcome
The Lawrence County Expanded Food Nutrition Education Program Assistant Senior (EFNEP) has not let the Nutrition Education Program, and those the program serve, slip through the cracks since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite being unable to have face-to-face classes, the EFNEP Assistant Senior was able to adapt the delivery of the nutrition curriculum in order to ensure clients were still receiving vital information to live healthier lives. A new Facebook account was created (Lawrence County KY NEP) and currently has 420 page likes. "Programs on the Go" bags were created each week with a new theme focused on nutrition. The "Programs on the Go" bags reached 665+ clients that included parents and children, this number continues to grow as more "Programs on the Go" are made available. The "Programs on the Go" bags included, but were not limited to the following: Meal Planning, What’s In a Food Date, Think Your Drink, How to Measure Properly, Growing Your Own Garden from Vegetable Seeds, Food Safety, Grilling Safety, and cooking activities and fun activity packets for kids.
The EFNEP Senior Assistant also partnered with the Lawrence County School lunch delivery program and had resources available for all students that received a school lunch. Additionally, the Family Resource Youth Service Coordinator at Blaine Elementary provided containers with soil to be used with lettuce seeds provided by the EFNEP Senior Assistant for students to grow their own lettuce garden. One participant messaged the EFNEP Senior Assistant saying, "Thank you for putting together the kits and activities. He was excited wearing his apron and helping make the apple bread using the tools we got yesterday" and "We tried the no knead bread recipe you shared on the page. It was so good thanks. The kids helped me make it and of course we used the measuring cups and spoons and aprons we got in the kit the other day. Thank you so much for the services and sharing these resources."
Although these are uncertain times, making a small effort can make incredible changes.
