FRuit Tree Grafting

Author: Jay Hettmansperger

Planning Unit: Garrard County CES

Major Program: Home & Consumer Horticulture

Plan of Work: Valuing Natural Resources and Establishing Community Environmental Awareness

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Garrard County ANR agent has been conducting a fruit tree grafting class every spring for several years. Many of the participants have attended several of the programs.  A survey of these repeat participants shows that they have been very successful in grafting and growing the apple trees they received from the program.  The survey showed that 85 percent have 6 or more trees surviving in their home orchard. They have used the knowledge gained from the program to care for and harvest fruit from the apple trees.  One hundred percent indicated they were very comfortable with grafting their own trees with knowledge gained from the Extension program. The 2020 Grafting program took on a new look due to the Corona19 virus. The in-person program was cancelled.  The Agent decided not to waste the opportunity to graft more fruit trees. He grafted all 75 apple trees and gave past attendees a chance to pick up some grafted trees to plant in their own orchard.  All trees were given away and are now growing in many backyards.
