Planning Unit: Trigg County CES

Major Program: Farmer's Markets

Plan of Work: Food for Everyone

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

According to statistics gathered from the Kentucky Extension Community Assessment Report for Trigg County, the food insecurity rate is 13.6%.  Many in the county depend upon the local market for access to fresh fruits and vegetables, so it was important that the Farmers Market be able to open safely.  The market traditionally opens the first Saturday of April and is open every Wednesday and Saturday through October.  With the COVId-19 restrictions and health risks the Market Manager and the City of Cadiz decided to postpone the market's opening until the first Saturday in May so that plans could be made to allow it to operated safely.

The Trigg County FCS agent was consulted as to ways to operate the Farmers Market and she suggested a drive through market.  This was implemented and the market opened the first Saturday in May.  The market was temporarily moved to the Trigg County Senior Center to allow a one way traffic pattern. Customers remained in cars while vendors came to to car to wait on the customers.  Public Health guidelines were followed for wearing of face masks, social distancing, and no contact service.  The market had 5 vendors for the drive through location and all vendors sold most of their stock each session.  Over 200 cars came through the Farmers Market each Saturday through May.  The FCS agent provided information packets containing the market rules, produce availability, nutrition information, and Plate It Up! Kentucky Proud recipes each session.
