Young Newly Independent Adult Learns the Ropes

Author: Brad Stone

Planning Unit: Lewis County CES

Major Program: Food Preparation

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Young adult who happens to be newly independent, since participating in the Healthy Choices for Everybody lessons with a group in Lewis County, unlocked some undiscovered cooking skills and became rather handy in the kitchen.  Prior to participation in the program, basic knife skills were absent, the ability to measure correctly certainly needed some work and safe food handling practices were questionable at best.  After going through the program, a deeper understanding of how to safely thaw and store food, especially meats and leftovers, had developed and the participant had become much more comfortable working in the kitchen with a variety of utensils.  Once quoted stating "This has helped me a lot.  I couldn't even slice a tomato before." with the excitement gleaming on their face.  Now with their new independent life ahead of them, the kitchen will no longer pose such an intimidating threat as before and healthy meals will be the norm in their home.
