Plan of Work: Environmental awareness and improvements
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Providing commercial pesticide training to Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana tri- state residents is a priority for the Boone County Extension Horticulture Program. Misapplication of pesticides and fertilizers has lasting health and pollution effects. Recertification requirements for commercial applicators guarantees their having to attend regular update meetings.
Getting pertinent topics addressed at these meetings is a priority. We involve the Kentucky Department of Agriculture Division of Pesticide Employees as well as University of Kentucky ANR specialists and industry experts. The fall 2019 training attracted 128 tri state clientele representing 26 commercial companies. Due to requests from previous attendees we added a session related to aquatic weed management. Clientele told us it was difficult to maintain certification in this category due to limited classes. 76 people attending had their recertification requirements met while other individuals learned material which will help them pass their initial certification test. 10 certified arborists attending the training received 4 Continuing Education Credits. Evaluations from the program scored 4.3 out of a possible 5. Comments received included: " We appreciate having a no-cost training in the fall of the year". 'Entire program was excellent. November is a perfect time for me and my employees to get our certification.
Those attending the conference now have the knowledge to apply pesticides and fertilizers in a safe manner. They now have the resources to find correct application methods and the laws which govern application.
