Public speaking skills are ranked number one among the skill sets of professionals. Other guiding factors for developing public speaking skills include leadership development, increased self- confidence, and ability to accept feedback. (University of California, 4-H Presentation Manual, revised 2016)
Oldham County 4-H involved over 225 members in the 4-H Public Speaking program. Extension staff presented workshops focused on effective writing and presentations skills. At LaGrange Elementary, over 100 4-H members focused their entire 4-H year curriculum around developing effective communication skills. All 100 members explored why effective communication is so important, parts of a speech, different types of speeches and of course delivery methods. LaGrange club members presented their impromptu speeches and were adding the finishing touches to their final speeches when the COVID 19 pandemic hit our community.
The pandemic led to schools closing just before all 225 4-H members from across the county were to present their speeches. The Extension staff worked with classroom teachers and students recorded their speeches via flip grid and their 4-H speech was incorporated in the NTI plans. The 4-H member’s speeches were judged virtually and advanced to virtual county and district events. Oldham County 4-H had three 4-H members advance to the State 4-H Virtual Communication Event.
Giving presentations develop many life skills, including the ability to speak in front of a group, and organize ideas. The 4-H Communications Program is presented thru cooperation of Oldham County 4-H, Oldham County Extension, and participating Oldham County Schools.
