The new electric pressure cookers are dominating the consumer small appliance market. Consumers see them as a way to streamline the cooking process.  With the increased trend of chronic disease and obesity in Kentucky, individuals, and families, need tools and that support healthful dietary decisions.  The versatility of the electric pressure cooker makes it an ideal cooking appliance tool for any household, but especially for those looking for quick and healthy ways to prepare meals.  Manufacturers promote them as appliances that make cooking easier, faster, smarter and healthier.  However, many electric pressure cooker owners are not confident or comfortable using their new appliance.

Gallatin County Cooperative Extension Service offered three separate electric pressure cooker hands on workshops.  Each participant received a workbook with valuable information and healthy recipes.  The Family and Consumer Science Agent presented a brief demonstration about pressure cookers where workshop participants gained knowledge about electric pressure cookers, and safety measures.  Workshop participants worked together in small groups to use an electric pressure cooker to prepare a variety of quick, affordable, and healthy recipes from the workbook.

100% of participants reported that they felt more confident and comfortable using an electric pressure cooker as a direct result of the class.  Participants also reported they felt more motivated to use their electric pressure cooker to prepare family meals. 100% of participants planned to try one of the recipes shared in the electric pressure cooker workbook at home.
