Major Program: Farm Management

Plan of Work: Adapting to Changing Agricultural Markets

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Buffalo Trace County Agriculture and Horticulture agents hosted a four session program for women agriculturalist on topics covering production of cut flowers, pasture management, cattle handling and care, and opportunities for maximizing profits on the farm.  The ladies enjoyed the hands on learning activities and were able to view first hand warm season forages and hear of the benefits and place on the farm.  One of the attendees stated the benefits of the Cut Flower session as: "It was relevant to me for diversification. Also I gained new ideas for marketing of other products by the examples they gave for marketing their flowers."  This provided us with insight on how not everyone may have the exact same interests but that information from one session can be utilized to fit into many other operations.

Another attendee shared insight on how the hands on cattle handling and care session encouraged her to make improvements on her farm.  Attending the session provided education on "Proper way to give shots. Chute system renovation."  Additionally a second attendee in the cattle handling and care session said that "We would like to build a shelter house for the cows to get in out of the weather."

Many of the ladies shared that they liked the farm tour to look at forages and livestock toxicity possibilities.  One attendee shared that she "Learned a lot about the sorghum as a grazing source. Farm tour was great!".   Another shared that she is now "more aware of the toxicity of these plants", when it relates to Johnsongrass and Sorghum-sudangrass.

The last session of the Farm School for Women program focused on ways to maximize profit.  One of the topics covered was record keeping.  67% of survey responses noted that their ability to keep records has improved after attending the session.
