Kentucky has the highest number of cattle east of the Mississippi River, but if you’ve ever been to Kentucky you know you’ll experience all four seasons in one month. With Kentucky’s unpredictable weather many cattle pastures end up destroyed from the mud. Kendal Bowman, Owen County’s Agriculture and Natural Resource Agent has been working with one of his producers on designing an economical high intensity backgrounding operation while avoiding the weather elements. Several Extension specialist have worked alongside the county agent and the producer in site selection, waste management, facility/structure design, marketing, and water harvesting. The producer plans to apply this information this upcoming summer to design a covered feedlot. When completed this will help increase his profits, grow the beef industry in Owen County and Kentucky, and increase the finished products for consumer’s nationwide
