Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
Public speaking is one of an adult's greatest fears. In order to combat this fear, new groups of students are getting experience in public speaking skills through the Campbell County 4-H Program. At St. Catherine School, 40 sixth through eighth graders received instruction in public speaking through speeches and demonstrations. The 4-H agent worked with each grade with exercises such as impromptu speaking and team demonstrations. Multiple workshops were held with all 3 grades to assist with their topic choice, speech delivery, and practice. Competitions were held for the speeches and demonstrations on two separate days. Judges were brought into the classroom and used the 4-H communication score sheets to determine the age group champions for each competition. Nineteen 7th & 8th graders participated in the Speech contest and five 6th graders participated in the Demonstration contest. Speech topics ranged from Vaping, OCD, History of 3D Glasses, Phobias, and Weird Laws. Demonstration topics ranged from Origami to Basketball to Soap Making. The students in each age group with the highest score have now been invited to compete at the county level. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic that competition will be done virtually later this month.
