Teens today want a safe place to grow and learn. They want a place that offers them programs and opportunities, so they can learn a new skill. The Floyd County 4-H Teen Council is a positive youth development program that strives to provide opportunities for youth to build life skills such as communications skills, self-confidence, and self-responsibility. Our Teen Council members participate in leadership development activities that expose them to a variety of opportunities for personal development and growth through volunteer work, community involvement, club work, project work and teaching at day and overnight camps. Leadership activities help youth develop confidence in their leadership potential and create their own sense of identity. Floyd County 4-H Teen Council alumni had this to say about what the Teen Council provided them.
“To me 4-H actually means coming together. It means starting something and continue building on it to make something great.” Tisha C.
“All of these random people were friends. And when I say random, I mean random. But that’s the thing though, even the first teen council meeting I went to, 4-H showed me how people can be so different, but still be super close friends. Over the years, I’ve seen so many of the first group grow up and be so successful.” Sarah S.
“4-H feels like a “safe haven” for me. For me 4-H has helped me gain ambition and makes you feel good about yourself in general. 4-H to me is a place where I can be myself without the worry or being judged, where I can state my opinions freely and be pushed toward my goals and where I can make so strong of an impact on other people’s lives, that I can’t help but become a better person myself.” Leanna H.
