According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) the state of Kentucky is 31.6% obese. The Nutrition Education Program in Knott County teaches low income families about nutrition and how to budget their money. Teaching these families how to eat properly and budget for it can lower the obesity rate in Kentucky.
The CDC reports that 46.2% of Kentuckians eat less than one time daily the recommended amount of fruit. It also reports that 24.9% eat less than one time daily of the recommended amount of vegetables.
As an incentive item to try and help promote the intake of vegetables each client got an My Plate portioned out plate for their children. In hopes to encourage children wanting to eat more veggies. One client said she had success with her child at least trying new vegetables and some she even liked!
