Farmers are always looking for ways to increase the profitability of their farms whether it’s increasing yields or looking at dual cropping a field. Union County Extension Services held a meeting to discuss different cover crop options for our area and how to implement them in row crop rotations. University of Kentucky’s Soil Scientist Edwin Ritchey provided a great presentation about not only how to implement cover crops into row crops but also benefits of cover crops along with trials located in western Kentucky. A great discussion took place focused around cover crops, grazing, and soil compaction. Since many of the farmers in attendance also owned livestock, beef cattle, they were interested in how they could use cover crops in the field as a feed source. The meeting also sparked interest in attending future cover crop discussion focused in both effective implementation and use as a grazing method. Both crop and livestock farmers attended the meeting. Farmers were able to discuss in depth with Dr. Ritchey about their own fields and many were able to make a decision about how they would utilize cover crops moving forward. This meeting provided farmers with the opportunity to not only hear how other area farmers were using cover crops but also get expert advice on what works best in the area.
