Soil Sampling. When most people think of an Agriculture Extension Agent this is one of the first services that they associate with the occupation, and rightfully so considering the average Extension Service in Kentucky will evaluate anywhere from 200-1000 soil sample results per year. As simple, and straight forward as these test and results may be for extension agents and longtime Kentucky farmers, interpreting these results presents a roadblock when a language barrier is present.

I was able to learn this firsthand in the fall of 2019 when I assisted a Hispanic farm manager by the name “Memo” interpret and implement soil sample results on the large Clark County farm that he successfully operates. By working with Memo, on a one-on-one basis regarding his sample results. We were able to correctly amend the farms soil properties in preparation for a massive alfalfa seeding. In addition to working through the soil samples we calibrated his seed drill prior to the seeding and evaluated the plating once the alfalfa germinated and began to grow. Memo has overcame many cultural barriers to become one of the finest beef cattle farm managers in Clark county.
