Four Pillars of Beef Production

Author: Clay Stamm

Planning Unit: Rowan County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Horticulture, Livestock, Forages, Agriculture

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

During the Fall of 2019 I was contacted by Dr Darrah Bullock, a University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Beef Specialist to host a extension style beef meeting, of course I committed to the offer as soon as I could because I know the quality of programing that the University beef specialist continuously put out. After settling on a date and time and talking with Dr Bullock further I realized that this wasn’t going to be traditional extension meeting. As a matter of fact, none of the specialist or myself were going to be presenting at his meeting, but instead the presentations were going to be handled by a small group of young talented undergraduate students that were participating in Dr Bullocks beef management class.

We began advertising for the meeting and calls began to trickle in with clients submitting their RSVP’s to attend. By the time the meeting took place we had 25-30 clients in attendance. The meeting went better than I had ever expected. Not only were the undergraduate students very knowledgeable about their topics, but the crowd was very conversational, and a lot of dialogue took place between, me, Dr Bullock, the student presenters, and the crowd. We discussed beef nutrition, genetics, forages, and reproduction. The crowd gave the students raving reviews and I formed relationships that night by providing clients with soil probes, bags, and numerous extension publications related to the content that was covered. This is a program I hope to continue with the beef unit for years to come.
