Finacial Management classes

Author: Brenda Cockerham

Planning Unit: Johnson County CES

Major Program: Good Credit Game

Plan of Work: Acquiring basic Life skills in Family and Consumer Sciences

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

This is the third year of delivering financial management classes with the Family Resource Center Director at the High School. Up to 60 people have attended sessions each year. This year we introduced the Good Credit Game. Attendees were asked if they had attended any of the sessions before and if so, if they were able to share anything they learned into practice. This year three raised their hands. One stated that after learning the importance of having good credit last year they followed through and contacted the one of the Credit Bureaus to discover details about their credit. Upon doing so, they learned that their records were being mixed up with a family member with the same name. After attending this year's session, they learned they could dispute the claims, how to do it and committed to improving their scores a greater accuracy in recording. A second person volunteered that they now have a budget they try to live within and a third volunteered that they save change in a separate container to have a small saving set aside for emergencies. Attendees frequently report that this is their first experience being at the Extension Office and learning what it is all about.
