Planning Unit: Daviess County CES

Major Program: Master Gardener

Plan of Work: Home and Consumer Horticulture, Master Gardeners

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Gardening is a popular hobby.  The Extension Master Gardener volunteers provide the horticulture Extension agent with the ability to reach more people with gardening interest in the community with science-based information.  The 2019 Extension Master Gardener Class was conducted in the fall over 14 weeks.  It was taught by the Daviess County Extension Agent for Horticulture Education and University of Kentucky Extension specialists.  Soil testing is one of the topics and an important tool used to grow healthy plants and to protect the environment from the over- application of fertilizer.   Time and money may be saved by determining if phosphorus, potassium, and/or lime is needed in the soil for plant growth.  All 12 participants demonstrated how to collect soil for testing.  In addition, through a final exam question, 100% of the participants correctly interpreted the results of the soil test, which indicated what nutrients are needed in the soil.  Furthermore, the interns gained gardening skills they could use to teach others how to collect a soil sample for testing in order to grow healthy and productive plants while protecting the environment.
