Annual Pasture Walk

Author: Samantha Anderson

Planning Unit: Entomology

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Forage and Livestock Management

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The 2017 Census of Agriculture reports that Graves County ranks 48th in production of cattle and calves statewide. While beef cattle production may not be the highest grossing industry in the county., the education of the cattleman/cattlewoman in Graves County still warrants consideration. In partnership with local producer, Mary Ann Ellison, and University of Kentucky forage specialist Dr. Chris Teutsch a pasture walk and fencing demonstration was held in early November.

The program consisted of a walking tour of a recently renovated pasture to identify and discuss weed control along with a discussion on forage best practices led by Dr. Teutsch. Representative from Gallaher demonstrated new methods related to intensive grazing fencing systems and provided participants with hands on training.

In the past two years, over 50 individuals have attended this annual program. A group discussion was conducted at the conclusion of each program. Because of this program, 100% of participants plan to make a change to their operation based on knowledge they gained.
