4-H Camp, Welcome to the Jungle

Planning Unit: Johnson County CES

Major Program: 4-H Youth Development Programming

Plan of Work: Acquiring basic Life skills in Family and Consumer Sciences

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Johnson County 4-H Council, County Extension Council and the State 4-H Office have identified acquiring basic life skills as a priority program for our youth. To meet this need, our adult 4-H Council hosts an annual fundraiser that contributes $6,750 to offset program costs. In addition, both adult and youth volunteer leaders train, and donate their time to attend the summer camoing session. Last year we increased our camping number to 57 participants and exceeded our minimum number of required attendees. The theme for camp was "Welcome to the Jungle" and during the week, our campers had a costume contest and activities that were related to the theme. The activities for camp included both UK staff taught activities and County volunteer-led activities. Campers learned how to be more independent, look after their things and get along with others. They learned or increased skills in classes such as Fabulous Foods Cooking, Canoeing, Archery, Riflery, Recreation, Swimming, Fishing, Rock Wall Climbing and Ziplining, Crafts and Nature Hiking.  The campers, teen volunteers, adult volunteers and UK Staff worked together to provide an outstanding program to our young people. It is rewarding to note that 5 campers who progressed to teen counselors have now matured into adults who are volunteering to ensure that youth receive the same opportunities in life skill acquisition that they received. This past summer, youth attending as campers commented that they would be old enough to become counselors in the next session and would be applying as Counselors to serve the younger 4-H members. Teen counselors indicated that after high school, they want to come back and volunteer as adults.
