Pike 4-H Represents State During Three National Meetings
“Those that strive to be above average soon are.” - H. Jackson Brown
Seven Pike County youth strove to be above average and were successful. Their wins on the national level are a great honor and a great way to learn life skills.
In October, four delegates, a volunteer, and I had the honor of representing our state at the National Junior Horticulture Contest. Held in Lincoln, Nebraska, the youth not only competed in the horticulture contest, but were also able to learn through many tours and workshops. Alyssa said, “I participated in the flower arranging workshop and it felt so good. I think this may be my life calling.
Bix stated, “I learned about hydroponics. It is amazing to see plants fed by fishing.” These delegates presented information on the conference to the Pike County 4-H Council, the Pike County 4-H Teen Club, and the Pikeville Rotary Club.
Two youth represented our Commonwealth during the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference in Louisville, KY. There, the two participated in the poultry judging and chicken barbecue contest. Katie placed third in the past egg production judging. The pair were able to network with youth from 25 states. Educational tours included Churchill Downs and a nationally recognized bat company.
Katie’s mom stated, “My daughter loves 4-H and has been involved since 4th grade. She is now a junior and it has given her self-confidence and leadership skills. The staff and leaders are dedicated to helping these kids be the best they can be! I highly recommend this program!”
One Pike youth interviewed for and won the gold achievement award. This began when she was chosen as one of the winners of this coveted award. Then, she was interviewed and captured one of the positions to attend the National 4-H Club Congress. She has presented at the Pike County 4-H Teen and Adult Leader Councils. Kiersten will be presenting at the Pike County Extension District Board later this month. She posted a video on her 4-H experience on Youtube and is applying for the Emerald Award.
She said, “When I first joined 4-H, I was very shy. Now I speak in front of over a hundred people. My goals are to attend UK and be a pediatrician. How has my experience with the animal science and 4-H leadership prepared me for this role? 4-H has given me a broad spectrum and helped me to understand different people. I know that we can be the change agent and light of hope for children.”
Ernestine Dotson recommends Pike County 4-H: "My granddaughter Kiersten is in it and loves it. It teaches the kids so much. They go and do things with the kids and they learn so much about themselves. I give it five stars!"
Communication, self-confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills are essential for the workplace. Pike County 4-H is helping our youth develop these skills for a better future. These youths are above average and are making the best better.
