Plan of Work: Water Conservation / Community Engagement

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

People, animals and plants are dependent on our Earth’s natural resources.  Everything from the air we breathe, to the water we drink, to the soil we use for food production-these resources are vital to our existence.  Therefore, it is important that we care for and respect these resources.  Understanding how our daily choices affect our environment, we can conserve natural resources and protect our environment for present and future generations.

Greenup County Extension recently partnered with local 4th and 5th grade teachers and 106 students to learn about habitats and ecosystems.   Lessons included: What is a habit and ecosystem; who and what lives in a habitat; what affects habitat such as weather and humans and finally how to care for local habitats.   The lessons also included a hands on lab exercise dissecting  owl-pellets.

Final observations of the lesson resulted in students understanding how science relates to the real world and people’s lives, and the environment we all depend on.
