Preemie Hat Project

Planning Unit: Fleming County CES

Major Program: Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Extension Homemakers in the Licking River Area have been challenged to scatter seeds of kindness.

The Fleming County Yarn club members took it to heart. They wanted to use their skills to create loving caps for premature babies. Club members and other folks from surrounding counties joined in this effort.   Over 250 hats were crocheted or knitted during a three month period.

About half of these hats were sent to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Lexington KY, and the other half was sent to NewbornsinNeed.org (a charity organization that distributes preemie hats to NICUs across the nation).

According to the CDC, “Preterm birth is when a baby is born too early, before 37 weeks of pregnancy have been completed.  In 2018, preterm birth affected 1 of every 10 infants born in the United States.”

Our Club leader made this comment: “We thoroughly enjoyed crocheting and knitting these sweet little hats; and we hope they keep 257 precious preemie babies warm, as well as, warm the hearts of their parents and families.

This Homemakers special interest club does a lot to support others as well as each other.   Creating and learning together has increased their abilities as well as increased their health benefits. They have less stress, due to laughter and the joy of helping others.
