Author: Amanda Sears

Planning Unit: Madison County CES

Major Program: Home & Consumer Horticulture

Plan of Work: Develop and Strengthen Leadership and Life Skills

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Madison County Horticulture Agent offered a class in December teaching how to make a holiday centerpiece using greenery that can be harvested from your landscape. The Agent worked with two master gardeners, each with a background in floral design, who taught the class.

The master gardeners demonstrated basic concepts in floral design. After their demonstration, the participants had the opportunity to make their own centerpieces using greenery that the Agent and master gardener club had harvested and prepared for the class.

An evaluation was given at the end of the class. According to the participants:

  • 100% felt they had a better understanding of basic design elements.
  • 100% plan to make centerpieces on their own in the future.
  • When asked how much they would be willing to pay for their centerpieces, the average amount was $20.27.
  • Creativity, self-reliance, and cost savings were sited as the main benefits of the class.
