Partnering with Edgewater Recovery for Better Nutrition for Adults
Kentucky State University set up a partnership with Edgewater Recovery to increase access to at-risk adults for better nutrition and health. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 19.7 million American Adults battle a substance use disorder. Edgewater allows SNAP ED classes 2 times a week to better educate the men about Nutrition. Although Edgewater made the class a requirement the men love the class and look forward to it. They often say “it’s their most favorite class and they really learn a lot from it.”
It has been proven to be a crucial growth for Kentucky State, as Edgewater continues to expand and accepts more clients. As clients learn more about Nutrition benefits they also gain benefits such as improving their well-being, improves ability to recover from illness and injury, help reduce diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressures, and cancers, increase their energy levels, and know the importance of budgeting and food safety.
Clients take 7 classes that include My Plate, Know Your Limits, Reading Labels, Budgeting, Breakfast, Food Safety, and Meal Planning. Each class clients prepare a healthy recipe to try on their own. A lot of clients have said “they didn’t know healthy foods could be so good,” while enjoying every recipe.
These classes help by educating in all aspects of Nutrition. Once the clients graduate from all classes they receive a bag of kitchen utensils to use for their healthy recipe. These often help motivate the clients into furthering their new, happy, and healthy lifestyle.
