Honey Bees and Other Pollinators – Educating all ages

Author: Keith Hackworth

Planning Unit: Floyd County CES

Major Program: Bees/Beekeeping

Plan of Work: Promoting Environmental Stewardship

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Extension continues to be very active in educating clientele of all ages about the importance of honey bees and other pollinators. Both the 4-H Agent and ANR Agent conducted programs in the schools and with community groups to make them aware of the importance of our pollinators. The clientele are introduced to different types of pollinators, plants that they pollinate and their importance to the environment. Honey bees are addressed in detail with demonstration hives, beekeeping equipment and honey sampling. Over one hundred and thirty youth were taught lessons to introduce them to the bee colony, basics of production and what's needed to become a beekeeper. More than seventy-five adults were educated about basic beekeeping, equipment needed, inspecting and treatment of the hives. Because of these efforts, numerous plantings made for the benefit of honey bees and other pollinators have been done in the county. Some of the results of our efforts are as follows: Three new Monarch waystations have been established with the assistance of the Extension Master Gardeners and community partners. Eight adults and four youth are trying beekeeping for the first time under the guidance of the Floyd County Beekeepers Association. In the upcoming year, we hope to expand our collaboration as a county team doing more programing and using our materials to reach more individuals and encouraging more youth involvement.
