"Inclusion means that people with disabilities have the same opportunities for involvement in meaningful and satisfying experiences as afforded other segments of the population." according to Stump, Henderson, Luken, Bialeschki, and Casey (2002). Some adaptations have to be made to increase the understanding by 4-H members and volunteers to the sensitive issues facing special needs youth. The youth with special needs benefit from activities and opportunities that let them use their talents and interests through the hands-on learning experiences that 4-H provides.

A Barren County 4-H’er with a special learning disability overcome a big hurdle this year at the KY State Fair.  She has participated in the 4-H Country Ham project for three years.  As part of the project all 4-H’ers are required to give a speech.  All of the materials for preparing a speech and extra time for individual study was provided by the Barren County 4-H Youth Development Agent.  The first year, she cried and became very sick and barely completed the project. The second year, she just cried.  This year, she presented her speech and received a 4-H blue ribbon!!!  She was so proud of herself as were all of the 4-H’ers and families involved in the 4-H project.

Her accomplishments have given her confidence to run for 4-H Club President (which she won) and participate in other 4-H project areas.  Her Grandmother commented, “The 4-H experiences have given her confidence to participate in school clubs and activities.  We are very thankful for everything that 4-H has done for her!”
