Plan of Work: Healthy from the Ground Up

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the 2017 State of Childhood Obesity, Kentucky is ranked third in high school student obesity at 20.2%. Unfortunately, youth in Clinton County struggle to understand healthy eating behaviors as much as their peers throughout the Commonwealth. The Clinton County Cooperative Extension Service implemented the Healthy Lifestyle Choices program for 16 high school food science class students. 88% of students increased knowledge in nutritional concepts taught such as the consequences of consuming too many sugar sweetened beverages, the importance of mindful eating, MyPlate, label reading, and other healthy eating concepts. 100% of students noted that they intended to read the Nutrition Facts Label following the series and plan to decrease sugar sweetened beverages by at least one per day. When asked to comment on the most significant thing that they will apply following the Healthy Lifestyle Choices program, student responses included the following: “I will drink more water”; “I will look before I drink an energy drink”; “Cutting down on soda”; and “I know how to important it is to read the food label”. Educational programs such as Healthy Lifestyle Choices are critical in promoting healthy eating behaviors that can be carried into adulthood.
