Farmers often have questions they want demonstrated instead of simply answered, which can be best implemented on their own farms rather than on university research plots. As they watch the demonstration unfold on their own farms, they can gain more valuable information from such
experience-based learning than can be delivered in a workshop or meeting. These real-world experiences can then be passed on to neighbors and friends through farm tours and field days, with hands on learning activities. For many years, the University of Kentucky, Kentucky Horticulture Council, and the Kentucky Governors office of Agriculture Policy have partnered to make these types of hands-on demonstration plots a reality for many producers across Kentucky. Caldwell County hosted an on-farm irrigation demonstration plot this summer with a new plasticulture and high tunnel producer. The summer was spent implementing specialized irrigation to help the producer get maximum production on limited growing space. The plot was finished with a twilight tour and demonstration of irrigation techniques delivered with hands-on activities and printed information to help participants design their own custom irrigation systems for their unique operations. 100% of participants stated they had increased knowledge of basic irrigation techniques. 50% stated they would implement one or more of the principles taught. Farmer involvement in designing and conducting field-based projects can also help ensure that recommended practice changes are grounded in real-world experiences and not just research-based education.
