According to the 2017 Census of Agriculture, the beef industry in Simpson County accounts for nearly 4 million dollars in annual sales and is home to over 9,000 cattle and calves. Cattle production remains stable in Simpson County with many new producers showing interest. Beef production is an integral portion of both large and small scale farming enterprises in this area.
Based on local stakeholders programming requests, the Simpson County Extension Agent for Agriculture held a Beef Field Day in conjunction with the Simpson County Cattleman’s Association at a farm located in Southeastern Simpson County. The field day featured information presented by Dr. J.D. Green, UK Weed Specialist, on pasture weed identification and control. A local industry specialist discussed mineral programs. The Simpson County Extension Agent for Agriculture along with USDA representatives discussed the benefits of a winter feeding pad and demonstrated a pad on the host farm that was newly constructed in 2018.
A total of 80 producers attended the Beef Field Day. According to follow-up evaluations from the Beef Field Day, 100% of participants reported that they had increased their knowledge as a result of the topics presented. 75% reported that they intend to implement a practice change on their farm due to information presented that evening. Some specific examples of production practices participants indicated they would change include doing more for weed control, timing of cutting and spraying pastures, importance of identifying weeds when they are small, minimizing hay loss, and providing adequate minerals.
