Farmers’ Market Members Achieve Successful Seasons

Major Program: Farmer's Markets

Plan of Work: Leadership and Community Development

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

A farmers’ market provides a community with locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats, and other value-added products. A market also provides the consumer direct access to the producer to learn more about the products for sale. In addition, a market provides a gathering place for the community.

The goal of the members of the Owensboro Regional Famers’ Market was to build a permanent facility under cover to make it easier for customers to shop out of the elements. The Daviess County Cooperative Extension Service Agent for Horticulture Education fostered the development of the organization and board to help with meeting their goal. This included resources of extension specialists for marketing display and vegetable production information. KCARD also helped over time with board development. The agent works with, and serves as an adviser to, the board and supported them through the development of the new building.

In May of 2018, the desire of the market members to have a permanent marketing facility was realized. Since the facility has been used for the 2018 and 2019 seasons, the market manager reported the number of customer visits increased by 14%, the number of vendors increased by 40%, and the sales of the market members increased by 10%, compared to the 2017 season when there was no permanent facility.
