Planning Unit: Cumberland County CES

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Plan of Work: Horticulture

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In Cumberland County, 100% of the school system qualifies for free meals. This along with children thinking that their food comes from the grocery store (when asked last year during a program) is the reason why there was a need to go into the schools to teach about agriculture and nutrition. The family and consumer science agent, SNAP-ED assistant, and agriculture and natural resources agent planned out several lessons for the elementary school. These lessons are formed around agriculture and nutrition. Students are also getting to try new recipes for the featured product. In October the three a fore mentioned individuals went to the elementary school and taught a lesson about pumpkins and harvest time. The students (k-5) watched a couple videos (Libby’s 100% Pumpkin from Farm to Can), listened to a book (Tractor Mac Harvest Time), completed a math lesson (Pumpkin Peddlers), learned about nutrition, and tried a recipe (pumpkin apple muffins). All students got to take home the recipe for the muffins. A total of 416 youth took part in the lesson throughout the day. Out of the 416, 170 students indicated by a raise of hands they were trying pumpkin for the first time. Overall, 78.8% of the 416 students indicated they liked the pumpkin apple muffins. After the lesson, parents (six) were notifying the Extension office that they were making the muffins for their students at home due to them bragging about how good they were.
