Plan of Work: Increasing Community Preparedness Through Increased Knowledge and Planning

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Future leaders of Fleming County took part in a week of discovery through the Community Passport Adventure Camp. Fourteen 4th, 5th and 6th grade youth participated in four full days of activities sponsored by the Fleming County Cooperative Extension Service FCS Advisory Council.   Also involved in planning and hosting were Fleming County Chamber of Commerce, Fleming County Tourism, and Discover Flemingsburg, This day camp focused on what makes a county operate smoothly, as well as the personnel that make our county safe and livable. 18 campers were given a passport, a back sack and water bottle to carry all of their necessary items as they explored different parts of Fleming County.  After each stop, they had their passport stamped or initialed.   They were led on a historic walking tour of the city and had many learning opportunities about their county history at the Covered Bridge Museum.  They also had the opportunity to visit local farms to see where their food came from.  They picked blackberries at a local farm, and later that day, made blackberry jam from their farm visit.   Other opportunity was to learn about our water system. How it comes in, how it is treated, plus the other end of how waste water comes in and treated before being released back into the environment.   The culmination event was for local law officials to spend the day with campers learning about fishing, and personal safety. This all was done for no cost to the students.   The local community supports this camp by providing food, transportation and volunteers. They do so because of the positive feedback given by the students and their families.   There is even envy of the adults wanting their own adult adventure camp.
