Planting the Seed- Creating New Volunteers

Author: Linda Hieneman

Planning Unit: Greenup County CES

Major Program: Empowering Community Leaders (general)

Plan of Work: Promoting Leadership, Civic Engagement, and Economic Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Volunteering in organizations is declining, especially in the Cooperative Extension Service.  This is largely due to our fast paced media driven lives.

The Greenup County Extension Agents would like to encourage volunteer training and recruitment beginning at an early age using 4-H Cloverbuds.  This group of 4-H’ers range in age from 5-8 years old.

The goals and objectives are to help this age group develop self-esteem, social interacting skills and learning skills. This group often advances into traditional 4-H and FFA members.

The effects of the beginning volunteer training can be seen in our young individuals who have benefited from the 4-H Cloverbud trainings.  This programming over the past several years has resulted in several FFA officers at the local and regional level, 4-H club leaders, 4-H State Teen Council leaders and Extension volunteers.
