Cattle producers who are interested in understanding today’s feeder calf market and grades attended Feeder Calf Grading School hosted by Owen and Franklin County Cooperative Extension Services. The single session was held at United Producers Inc. Stockyards in Owenton KY on October 3rd, 2019. Speakers Tim Dietrich from Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Office of Agricultural Marketing and Jodee Inman from U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service explained what graders and order buyers are looking for in sale calves; what producers should look for in judging the grades of their own calves; and how producers can maximize their return in the sale barn. Kendal Bowman, Owen County Ag Agent and Keenan Bishop, Franklin County Ag Agent worked with the manager of the yard, Doyle Devers on purchasing steers and heifers to use as examples during the Grading School. The participants loved how they had real-life examples, this helped them understand why even though they had a black 500lb steer and their neighbor did to, why theirs may have docked a little when it went through the sale ring. Kendal Bowman stated this had been a very successful program in the past and they plan to continue it in the future!
