Success StoryTree Planting at Kirksville Park

Tree Planting at Kirksville Park

Author: Amanda Sears

Planning Unit: Madison County CES

Major Program: Home & Consumer Horticulture

Plan of Work: Increase Knowledge of Agriculture and Natural Resources through Education and Experience

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In the summer of 2016, Madison County designated two new county parks, Kirksville and Union City. The Jemima Boone Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) contacted the Madison County Horticulture Agent because they wanted to do a tree planting at the new park in Kirksville. The Horticulture Agent, the Regional Forester, and members of the DAR met several times to determine what types of trees were needed in the park. The Agent ran soil tests on the area and worked with the Forester to determine what species of trees would do best in the area. A plot plan was developed for placement of over 20 trees. The group chose trees native to Kentucky including sycamore, willow oak, roughleaf dogwood, and yellow poplar. The trees were 1 and 2 year old seedling which came from the Kentucky Division of Forestry. The Regional Forester and the Horticulture Agent demonstrated to the DAR group how to properly plant a tree. The Regional Forester also taught the DAR group how to make tree protectors which were placed around the trees after planting. The Horticulture Agent did follow up visits during the growing season to check on the seedlings. She also explained to the group how to check to see if a tree needed to be replaced. The DAR group plans on replacing any trees which do not survive and has started an inventory of trees located at the site.
