~~As Extension Agents, we strive to identify programing needs in our community, and address those needs to the best of our ability.   During the spring of 2017, we were hearing repeated reports of struggles with Johnson grass control in crop fields, home lawns, and along roadways. As this subject was being brought up in multiple community meetings that we were attending, we decided it was time to act! In an effort to address the rising issue of Johnson grass control in the county, the Extension Office teamed up with the Clark County Farm Bureau and County Judge Executive Henry Branham to organize an informational community meeting. Our Cooperative Extension Summer Intern Kendall Bowman took the lead on this project and organization quickly began to take place. It was decided that we would title this meeting as a “Johnson Grass Workshop” and we would be covering the topics of; Johnson grass characteristics, control methods for Johnson grass, and livestock precautions with Johnson grass.  The meeting went off without a hitch! Mr. Jack Wises’ farm provided a perfect venue for the evening and the teamwork of various groups provided a very solid informational workshop. We were able to advertise through various media outlets including, Extension Newsletters, the local radio, local newspaper and our Cooperative Extension Facebook page. This advertising generated a meeting attendance of 49 participants! Results from our post-meeting evaluation reported that a majority of participants had learned new methods for controlling Johnson grass and planned to implement those methods in the near future. In the same evaluation participants indicated that this was a topic they would like to learn even more about, so perhaps this is a program that we can continue on into the future!
