Author: Sherry Becknell
Planning Unit: Owsley County CES
Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)
Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
The Healthy Choice Curriculum lessons range from, My Plate, Meal Planning, Keeping Foods Safe, Grains, Fruits, Eating Better on a Budget and so on. Here in Owsley County money is an ongoing issue with each and every family, most families are on a fixed monthly income. How to budget seemed to be a popular interest for the program families. After the completion of each Healthy Choice lesson, extra time was spent on how to budget. The budgeting lesson included meal planning, couponing, shopping sales and using left over food items.
At the end of the year 63 families saved a total of $3,820.00, which was a saving of $60.63 per household. To some this may not seem like a huge amount, but if you’re living on a fixed income and every dollar is accounted for when you get it $60.63 is a big savings.
Let’s make it count.
